State Run Casinos Could Be Challenged in Sweden

The fact that gambling is a government monopoly in Sweden was introduced to the global poker and casino industry when it was announced that Svenska Spel, once a privately owned bookmaker but now a government owned gambling outfit, was going to partner with the Swedish government to launch a poker site. If the Moderate Party in Sweden has anything to say about the subject, however, the current government gambling monopoly would be disbanded and a new well regulated open market system would be put in its place. The Moderate Party has its eye on the upcoming September elections and if placed in power, will counteract 1994's Lottery Act and 1999's Casino Act.
