Catholic School Parents All for Casino Money
02, July 2006
A battle surrounding gambling and religion may soon begin in Edmonton but the participants may not be what would be expected. On one side is the Catholic Church, through the representation of Calgary Bishop Fred Henry and Edmonton Archbishop Thomas Collins, has taken a stand against gambling money from casinos being used to improve Catholic schools. On the other side the parents of the students attending the Catholic schools have given feedback to Edmonton Catholic school board trustee Janice Sarich indicating that they would like to see the casino money continue to flow into the school.
The archbishop has stated that such activity is immoral but left it at that, while Bishop Henry has said he would like to blacklist the Catholic schools that raise funds through casinos.
