West Virginia Gambling Addicts Go Up
19, June 2006
Over the past three years number of West Virginians claiming addiction to online gambling has more than tripled. At the State Problems Gamblers Help Network counselors will be meeting with at least 60 people who have serious problems with online gambling, in comparison to the year 2000 when the number was zero. The director of the Gamblers Help Line, Mia Moran-Cooper, says that the availability of online gambling is to blame, pointing out that in the middle of the night you can't succumb to a sudden impulse to place bets at a racetrack when you're in your bed, but you can get out of bed and log on to gamble online. In April the National Council of Problem Gambling provided statistics on April that show that more than 600,000 people between the ages of 14 and 22 say that they gamble online at least once a week, with comparable numbers in West Virginia.
