With the incredible proliferation and growth of the online poker industry, and the gambling industry as a whole, renewed attention has been brought to problem gambling and pathological gamblers. Wonder drugs have been discussed, hotlines are ringing off the hook, and gambling critics are getting the word out. But what about the friends and family of problem gamblers? This is a question given much thought by University of Calgary Ph.D. psychology student Nicole Peden.
Peden examine the number of calls received in the problem gambling line at the University, and noted that 26% of the calls came from the friends and family of problem gamblers. From here Peden has decided to start a unique program that focuses on helping these individuals specifically.
