Addiction Rates Are a Because of Online Gambling
31, May 2006
According to the chairman of gambling addiction charity Gamcare, online and mobile phone gaming has caused addiction rates to go up. Anthony Jennens says that the unregulated gambling industry has contributed to the fact that there are as many as 350,000 people in Britain with a gambling addiction. Six years ago, according to the charity, only 2% of those seeking help were women. Today that number is closer to 9%. Because women would normally not visit traditional betting shops, the blame has been pinned on the anonymous nature of online gambling.
Nine months ago the help forum on the Gamcare web site had 10,000 users. Today that number is more than 90,000, more proof as far as Gamcare is concerned that gambling problems are on the rise.
