Questions on Tribal Run Casinos Crop Up in Michigan
10, May 2006
The 17 tribal-run casinos in the state of Michigan have become a billion dollar industry, one that is not currently paying as much in revenue sharing to the state that they could be. According to an in-depth report on online news site The Free Press, to date, over $300 million in gambling revenue sharing payments that they would otherwise have collected are lost due to a deal the state made with the seven tribes that allow them to withhold payment.
One side of the story tells of state inspections that did not reveal problems that mean sometimes millions of dollars to the Michigan taxpayer, but others tell of no ties to crime or mob influences, and that the tribes do a fine job regulating themselves.
